Our Mission
We apply psychological knowledge to improve the experiences and outcomes for clients of social service organizations.
Improving Experiences
Improving Outcomes
Brush Arbor Consultants was founded in 1999 to develop workshops that addressed the legacy of slavery in American culture.
We later expanded Brush Arbor Consultants to include video production and publishing. The name of the business was also changed to Brush Arbor Press.
Brush Arbor Press became a subsidiary of Lake Enterprise (LE) in 2009, and extended services to include publishing and distribution for new authors, and small businesses.
Our goal is to support new authors who have something important to share, who are not part of the mainstream, and who would not find a publisher easily.
Brush Arbor Press was started by Terri Pease, Ph.D. and Reverend Deborah E. Lake in 1999.
Terri Pease has more than 30 years of experience in helping social service agencies make use of new knowledge in other fields to improve the outcomes for their clients and constituents.
Deborah Lake has more than 20 years of experience in teaching how to address the pain and oppression that comes with homophobia, racism, and misogyny.
What is a Brush Arbor?
During slavery people who were unable to worship independently would steal away to quiet places in the woods.
They would build small structures, a brush arbor, of saplings and branches to serve as cover.
Thus, the Brush Arbor was a private place of spiritual self- determination for African-Americans
